North of the center of Magdeburg lies an important part of the city's future - the science quarter. This quarter consists of the campus of the Otto-von-Guericke University, a number of research institutes and the science port. Key to the area's potential development is the combination of mixed program and unused space. In order to activate the development a quick and simple planning process should be implemented. By using an open configuration the plan will encourage communication and enable connections between the different programs.

To achieve this, De Zwarte Hond and Studio UC propose to invest in a public space strategy for the campus and science port. Four different areas each with their own identity will arise; a faculty area where students and teachers move around during the week, an area where students will live being busy day and night, a more closed space where all laboratories are located and the science port where there will be a mixture of both land and water activities.

The strategy is to connect these different areas as if they were parts of a pearl necklace by use of a simple, visible Pink Runner that stretches from the Campus site to the science port.
As an first action this runner will be painted on the ground to establish an immediate connection. Then in the long term it will be transformed into high quality public space as the nearby buildings are developed or renovated.

In addition to the targeted expansion of public spaces, De Zwarte Hond and Studio UC propose to activate strategic places and spaces along the Pink Runner by temporary uses. The temporary activities will crystallize new activity clusters gradually developing the area into a 'place-to-be' .
